Love Letters to America is an ongoing photographic collection documenting movements of social resistance across the United States. The work emerged from a journey that began in Ferguson, Missouri, following the killing of Michael Brown, and extends through New York, Baltimore, and Richmond, Virginia, the former capital of the Confederacy. Documented by Jordan Shanks over several years, the photographs bear witness to acts of civil disobedience, community formation, and the reshaping of public space, particularly in cities where histories of racial violence and power are physically embedded in the landscape. The project functions both as documentation and reflection, offering a visual record of a generation confronting inherited systems while imagining new forms of collective belonging.
